SENECA WIREв„ў & MFG CO. - FOSTORIA, OHIO - METAL PRINTING BLOCK - c1920's This rare wood and metal letterpress printing block is a wonderful piece of manufacturing history from Seneca Wire & Manufacturing Company, located in Fostoria, Ohio. The block measures 0.925" deep by 1.505" high by 1.39" wide and weighs approximately 2.3 ounces (64 grams). It is believed to have been produced and used in the early 1920's, making it approximately 82 years old. The copper/zinc electroplated surface of the block has been chemically cleaned to remove tarnish and residual inks, revealing the brilliant copper color of the metal. Before the digital age, printed paper was produced using movable type and wooden/metal printing blocks, set in a frame (known as a chase) and inked with a roller (also known as a brayer) before paper was pressed into the inked surface through a printing press. This process is known as relief printing and includes woodcut, relief etching, linocut, linotype, and metal cut. This particular printing block is a professionally made letterpress block used for printing. The image on the printing block is a registered trademark of Seneca Wire Company, featuring a coil of wire surrounded by words and images. Seneca Wire & Manufacturing Company is the oldest tempered wire manufacturer in the United States and is amongst the oldest wire companies in North America. The company produces round wires, rolled and drawn flat, square, and shaped wire composed of high carbon and alloy grades for various industries. This rare advertising printing block makes a perfect addition to any collection or gift for history buffs. As the likelihood of finding another metal and wood block with this image is slim at best, it's a unique and one-of-a-kind piece. Please note that the surface of the block has been slightly degraded due to tens of thousands of impressions made on it. Also, one of the photographs has been intentionally reversed to show what the image would look like when it was printed on paper. We apologize for the removal of our previous discounts due to eBay's surcharges and inability to meet their shipping criteria. This piece is a historical artifact, and as such, no warranty or returns are offered on this item. As soon as payment is received through PayPal, the item will be packaged and shipped
